The Isle Handpress is the Private Press of wood engraver Andy English. It was established in 1992 and its publications have featured the artist’s wood engravings and are more akin to artist’s books than “fine press” books.
All publications are designed, engraved, printed and bound at the press, which is located in the Fenlands of rural Cambridgeshire in Little Downham near the cathedral city of Ely. Another name for the settlement is Downham-In-The-Isle which gave the press its name.
Most of the books are small or miniature in size. They feature engraved images, rather than lots of text. Common themes include wildlife, countryside and locations that are significant to the artist. Many examples of Andy’s wood engravings can be seen on his website.
